4 Signs Your AC is Broken
During summer, there is no better friend than your trusty air conditioner. However, air conditioners aren’t perfect and sometimes break down and leave us sweating. AC problems are not always obvious, so here are some signs it may be time for an AC repair.
1. Blowing Hot Air (Or No Air)
This is perhaps the most glaring issue that can arise with your AC. If your home feels warm even though you have the AC turned on, it can be frustrating. Whether you wave your hand over a vent and hot air is hitting you, or you don’t get any air at all, it will quickly result in an uncomfortably warm home.
A lack of air could mean that your filters or ductwork are clogged. Warm air may signal a leak in your refrigerant or an issue with your compressor.
2. System Leaking
Pooling liquid around your air conditioner is never a good sign. Your AC contains refrigerant, a chemical that helps convert warm air to cool air. Leaking refrigerant can be a health hazard, so if you notice something leaking when you use your AC, call your local HVAC technician for a repair. Similarly, an abundance of water leaking from your AC is a problem, likely with your condensate line.
3. Strange Sounds & Smells
There will always be a quiet hum from your AC, and it’s important to recognize the sound when your AC is running normally. But anything that sounds out of the ordinary, like grinding, screeching, or banging, should be addressed by a professional.
Also, bad smells can be frustrating and a health hazard. A musty smell may mean mold or mildew in your ductwork — a sign of possible excess moisture.
4. High Humidity
Your AC should cool your home and also help regulate humidity levels. Humidity alone can make the air feel sticky and hotter than it really is.
If your home feels cool but still humid, there may be an issue with your air conditioner. Or, it may require a dehumidifier to make your home more comfortable.
