How Does a Thermostat Work?
Your thermostat’s main switch, which determines whether to turn on the heat or the air conditioning, is a mercury switch. This means that it has a small tube that contains a tiny amount of liquid-metal mercury and three small metal rods. When the switch is flipped to turn on the heat, for example, the mercury tips to the left and comes in contact with one of the rods.
Directly below the mercury switch is a thermometer coil. The thermometer coil is a coil of two thin metal strips that have different expansion and contraction rates, depending on the temperature. When the surrounding air is heated up, one of the strips expands and pulls the mercury switch so that the system shuts off. Once the air begins to cool down again, it contracts and the switch turns the heater back on to maintain the desired temperature.
Top signs there is something wrong with your thermostat include:
- The thermostat display is off/blank
- Nothing happens when you turn on your heating/cooling system
- Your system cycles on and off without properly heating/cooling your home
- Your heating and cooling system runs constantly, even when you don’t want it to
- The temperature in your home is uneven from room to room
As mentioned above, there are a number of things that can cause a thermostat to malfunction. If your thermostat just randomly shuts off one day, check to see if it needs new batteries. If it still doesn’t work after the batteries are replaced, call a technician right away. Our experts at Rainforest Plumbing & Air can diagnose issues with your device and fix them quickly. And if you do need a replacement, we can offer you the most advanced thermostats in Phoenix. Just give us a call for a free estimate, and find out how much more comfortable your home will be with a working thermostat.
